How to Apply for a Marriage License

You may apply in person for a marriage license Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., except legal holidays. You can apply online any time. In order to complete the online application process, both applicants must come together to the Court between the hours listed above, with any additional required materials mentioned in these instructions.

At least one of the applicants must be a resident of Athens County and the marriage must be performed in the State of Ohio. If both applicants are from out of state but wish to be married in Athens County, they must obtain their license in Athens County.

Applicants must present state issued identification. If the state identification does not include an Athens County address, also bring some other proof of residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement).

If either applicant is under 18 years of age, contact the court for further information.

If either applicant has been previously married and divorced, a certified copy of the final order or decree granting the divorce or dissolution is required for the most recent divorce.

Cost of the license is $50 cash or credit card. Checks are not accepted.

License may be used the same day it is issued. It must be used within 60 days. The day of issue is day 1 of the 60 days.

No blood test is required.
